Some very unexpected news to report, director Scott Derrickson has dropped out of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange sequel.
The studio confirmed his departure in a statement, attributing it to “creative differences.” Derrickson, who oversaw the first “Doctor Strange,” will remain as an executive producer.
“Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ due to creative differences,” Marvel said in a statement to Variety. “We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”
Derrickson also said the decision was mutual.
“Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on ‘Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness’ due to creative differences,” Derrickson tweeted. “I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as EP.”
Derrickson, who directed the first film, might have started to buckle under the pressure of having to connect all the puzzle pieces together for the next sequel. The first Doctor Strange film was very much a standalone film with minor hints of its involvement in the bigger Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, Avengers hero, the Scarlet Witch, is said to play a big role in the film. Rumors also suggest the inclusion of things like the Illuminati which was a secret cabul of characters like Namor, Doctor Strange, Tony Stark, and Professor Xavier. Other rumors suggest that a version of the Defenders will appear in the film (not the Netflix one, but rather the comic book incarnation that consisted of The Hulk, Silver Surfer, Namor, and Strange.)
The film will begin production in May and there are not expected to be any delays when it comes to shooting. The search for a replacement is currently underway.
My pick on who should sit in the director’s chair? Sam Raimi. He’s dealt with Marvel before having made 3 Spider-Man films, and he knows how to seamlessly blend horror and comedy together, just check out the Evil Dead films. Plus Raimi could bring his signature flair to the more magical and darker edges of the MCU giving us a very unique Marvel film we have never seen before in the MCU.
Doctor Strange 2 opens in theaters May 7th, 2021.
