Robert Eggers really enjoys being weird for the sake of being weird. His movies are practically critic-proof because it’s hard to wrap your head around them. Like Woody Allen films without the dry wit replaced by atmospheric music and fever dream-like cinematography. Two things Eggers films excel at.
Shot in black-and-white with a 1.19:1 aspect ratio, the film stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as two lighthouse keepers who start to lose their sanity when a storm strands them on the remote island where they are stationed. The film is supposed to be a psychological horror movie but comes across more like a dark comedy with the two constantly getting drunk and rambling incoherently. When they aren’t doing that they are farting or pleasuring themselves to an imaginary mermaid.
Yes, this film is not like his previous film, The Witch. It actually has more in common with the much maligned film, Swiss Army Knife. Maybe if you are highly intoxicated or under the influence of some powerful substances you can do a double feature with both of these mentioned films.
All in all, the movie is basically a descent into madness from the perspective of both men. However both are also very unreliable narrators, at points I wasn’t even sure if Willem Dafoe was real or just a figment of Robert Pattinson’s imagination.
Judge for yourself. I can’t recommend or not recommend this film. You just have to see it for yourself.
