“Bloodshot” is a super hero film that would have been right at home amongst the dozens of origin films from the early 2000s. But superhero films have evolved since then and this film feels really like something from a bygone era. The only thing more dull than the story is the paint by numbers action scenes.
Bloodshot is a 2020 American superhero film based on the Valiant Comics character of the same name. It is intended to be the first installment in a series of films set within a Valiant Comics shared cinematic universe.Directed by David S. F. Wilson (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Jeff Wadlow and Eric Heisserer and a story by Wadlow, the film stars Vin Diesel, Eiza González, Sam Heughan, Toby Kebbell, and Guy Pearce. It follows a Marine who was killed-in-action, only to be brought back to life with superpowers by an organization that wants to use him as a weapon.
The film was supposed to be a set up for a shared universe of superhero films based on the characters of Valiant Comics. However, the film goes all in on Vin Diesel who works best with an ensemble cast and not so well when the entire film falls on his shoulders. The film doesn’t really seem to show any signs of life until Lamorne Morris, who plays Wilfred Wigans shows up.
Another let down was the fact that Vin Diesel doesn’t even look like the title character until the final act of the film. Throughout most of the movie he just looks like a super strong Dominic Toretto from the Fast & Furious films.
Lastly, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the film to be arrive early on VOD, I don’t think we will be seeing anymore films from this iteration of the cinematic Valiant Universe. But if you do want to see a much better version of a live action interpretation of the Valiant characters check out Bat In The Sun’s Ninjak vs The Valiant Universe web series:
Bloodshot is a missed opportunity to build another comic book cinematic universe. The film is like a low rent Zack Snyder film without any of the flair. HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience does not recommend Bloodshot.
