“Russian Doll” Showrunner Creating A Female Centric Star Wars Series For Disney Plus?

There has been a lot of rumors swirling around websites regarding what will be the next Star Wars series to hit the Disney Plus streaming service. Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan series was on the fast track but then was taken back to the drawing board. The Rogue One based series starring Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor has had some casting updates but not much else. Now, a new series is being talked about from the creator of Netflix’s “Russian Doll.”

Per Deadline:

Disney+ is developing a female-centered Star Wars series that will be written and showrun by Lesley Headland, a co-creator of Netflix’s Emmy-winning dramedy series Russian Doll.

Deadline has confirmed the gist of the series. While the exact plot is under wraps, but the series is understood to be a female-driven action thriller with martial arts elements and set in an alternate timeline from the usual Star Wars universe. Disney declined comment on the project, which was first reported by Variety.

It marks the latest Disney+ original series in the Star Wars universe, following the successful The Mandalorian created by Jon Favreau which is already underway on Season 3 ahead of its Season 2 bow. That too has a strong female element in Gina Carano’s butt-kicking shock trooper-turned-mercenary Cara Dune.

Female driven show with martial art elements? Okay. But the puzzling aspect of this news is that the series could be set in an alternate timeline from the usual Star Wars Universe. What does that mean exactly? Could it mean a parallel timeline? Is it set in the past? Or is this still in the very early stages of development? I am going to go with the latter until we get further news. But one thing is for sure, Disney Plus is already moving ahead with a third season of “The Mandalorian.”
