You couldn’t go to a book fair in the 90s without seeing the classic Animorph series that featured (then) cutting edge special effects of kids transforming into various animals. Well, get ready to be slapped with some nostalgia because they are apparently making a come back.
Scholastic and Picturestart are partnering to bring the classic book series to the big screen. The stories followed five teens who could morph into any animal they touched.Lucchese Friedman from Scholastic Entertainment shared, “The central themes of Animorphs have resonated strongly with kids for more than two decades, and the time is right for a feature film that takes this captivating sci-fi adventure to another level for audiences today. Picturestart has an incredible track record of success, and Erik and his team are the perfect partners to help bring this exciting new series based on the adventure-packed books to movie screens.”
Animorphs is a science fantasy series of children’s books written by Katherine Applegate and her husband Michael Grant, writing together under the name K. A. Applegate, and published by Scholastic. It is told in first person, with all six main characters taking turns narrating the books through their own perspectives. Horror, war, dehumanization, sanity, morality, innocence, leadership, freedom, family, and growing up are the core themes of the series.
Published between June 1996 and May 2001, the series consists of 54 books and includes ten companion books, eight of which fit into the series’ continuity (the Animorphs Chronicles and Megamorphs books) and two that are gamebooks not fitting into the continuity (the Alternamorphs books). The series was originally conceived as a three-part series called The Changelings, in which Jake was named Matt, and his little brother Joseph took the place of Cassie. The books were also adapted into a television series of the same name on Nickelodeon, YTV and Global Television Network from 1998 to 1999.
