Creepshow. Trick R Treat. V/H/S. These are some of the gold standard horror anthologies gore hounds have been blessed with over the years. But sadly, good horror anthologies are always followed by a slew of shitty ones with low budgets and horrible scripts. Luckily, Books of Blood is one of the gold standard exceptions.
Spewed from the dark corners of author Clive Barker’s mind comes this nightmarish and haunting anthology of horror stories that all merge into each other seamlessly. Whether it’s the girl who hears everything with a shady past, the medium, or two thugs, each story has at least one if not more truly horrific scenes that will stay with you long after viewing.
This movie is gory, horrifying, and very well paced. Every time you want to start rooting for one of the characters something is revealed about them that makes you hate them. and just wait until it’s revealed what the actual book of blood is. That scene is probably the most terrifying and disturbing scene of the film.
I really hope enough people watch this and give it a chance because I could see this becoming a yearly event film series on Hulu. It’s really set up for that at the end which is very much open ended.
I don’t want to go into too much detail about each story in the film because I think this is a film best seen rather than explained in a review. The first story might take away to get going but once it does you will be hooked. My favorite story was the second one.
In conclusion, Books of Blood is a scary and bloody horror anthology and one of the best new offerings this Halloween season. The HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience highly recommends you DEVOUR THIS FILM!
