Unhinged is the very definition of “guilty pleasure.” The film wants to come across as a mix of Joyride and Hitcher while trying to be a social commentary on the ruthless aggression is running rampant throughout our country. Does it succeed? Kind of.
The film is directed by Derrick Borte, from a screenplay by Carl Ellsworth. The film stars Russell Crowe, Caren Pistorius, Gabriel Bateman, Jimmi Simpson and Austin P. McKenzie. It tells the story of a young woman who is terrorized by a seemingly mentally illstranger following a road rage incident.
The film starts off showing a variety of road rage incidents and how self absorbed people are in their phones. So much so that when someone is straight up murdered by Cooper (Crowe) in a very public semi-packed place, people either run or take out their phones instead of helping the victim.
Crowe is an absolute monster in this. He’s a fat and imposing stress bubble of a man that starts to create a body count either through his actions or through the well shot car chase scenes that send surrounding cars into what looks like a destruction derby. One particular vehicular death scene is like something out of Final Destination.
Rachel (Caron Pistorius) hold her own against Crowe in the film. When her kid is in danger she goes into full on momma bear mode and the fighting between her and Crowe is both brutal and unnerving. However it is nice to see a female protagonist fight back and dish out as much damage as she receives.
Is Unhinged the next great stalker thriller? No, some parts of the plot are a little over the top and unrealistic. However the film is fun to watch and Crowe gives a pretty memorable performance. The HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience gives Unhinged A MILD RECOMMEND.
