Will Smith and Janet Hubert have finally put their differences aside! The former co-stars sat down together for the first time in 27 years during “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunion special on HBO Max to discuss the actress’ contentious exit from the sitcom nearly three decades earlier. Hubert originally played Aunt Viv for three seasons of the show. She left in 1993 citing “creative differences” and was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid. The casting shakeup sparked an ongoing feud between Smith and Hubert, which has continued in the public eye — until now!
The reunion brought together all of the original cast with the exception of actor James Avery who played Philip Banks. Avery passed away in 2013 but his impact on the show was honored in a very classy way.
The Smith/Hubert feud was stuff of rumors for years but the reunion special actually reveals Hubert was not in fact the person who was the troublemaker. For a long time, she was labeled by many within NBC and Smith to a certain degree as being “hard to work with.” When in fact she was pregnant in real life (not just in the show) and was dealing with a very abusive relationship at the time. The actress kept that latter part to herself and to a young 21 year old Will Smith she was just seen as a cancer on the set at the time.
Luckily, the two were able to reconcile during the HBO Max Reunion (and hopefully after the cameras went off) as Smith invited Hubert to the Fresh Prince set to reunite with the original cast. It was a surreal moment for Hubert and fans.
As reunions go this one is filled with nostalgia that will have you laughing and crying as you watch it and shows just how far all of the cast has come over the years. And let me just tell you, most of don’t look like they have even aged that much at all.
The Fresh Prince Reunion Special is now streaming on HBO Max.
