Debuting today in the United States, is the action packed disaster film, Skyfire (Chinese: 天·火; pinyin: Tiānhuǒ) which was a 2019 Chinese disaster action film about a volcanic eruption at a resort. It is directed by Simon West, written by Wei Bu and Sidney King, and stars Wang Xueqi, Hannah Quinlivan, Shawn Dou, and Jason Isaacs. The film is China’s first big-budget disaster film, and producer Jennifer Dong expressed hope that it would be a “breakout film” for the genre in China the way The Wandering Earth was for science fiction.
Though originally scheduled to be released in July 2019, it debuted in China on December 12, 2019, and ranked #1 at the box office on opening day.
The film follows Geologist Wentao Li (Xueqi Wang) who vowed he would never return to Tianhuo Island after a catastrophic volcano eruption tragically killed his wife. But 20 years later, his daughter Meng (Hannah Quinlivan) continues his research work on the island that took her mother’s life, developing a brilliant eruption forecasting system that could save countless lives. The island has now been transformed into a thrill-seeking theme park by greedy businessman Jack Harris (Jason Isaacs) despite Meng’s warnings. She was right. Distraught over his daughter’s safety, Wentao lands on the island as the volcano begins to erupt. It’s a race against the clock to save his daughter, and the tourists and villagers from the apocalyptic chaos.
Skyfire is now streaming on VOD.
