Cobra Kai is a martial arts comedy-drama streaming television series, which serves as a continuation of what the show’s creators call the Miyagi-Verse (films from the The Karate Kid (franchise) that focus on the beliefs of Mr. Miyagi). The series was created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, and stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, who reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence from the 1984 film, The Karate Kid. It is set 34 years later, re-examining the narrative from Johnny’s point of view, and his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo leading to the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel. Cobra Kai also stars Courtney HenggelerXolo MaridueñaTanner BuchananMary MouserJacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, and Martin Kove.

The series launched on YouTube Red with the first two seasons being released in 2018 to 2019. In June 2020, Netflix acquired the series, and the third season released on January 1, 2021. In October 2020, the series was renewed for a fourth season ahead of the third-season premiere. As of January 2021, the show has been watched by 73 million Netflix member households between the three seasons.

The first season of the series had a positive response from critics upon its premiere. At the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds a 100% approval rating. The second season has also received a positive response at Rotten Tomatoes, holding an 89% approval rating with an average score of 7.34 out of 10, based on 28 reviews. The third season of the series had a positive response from critics. At the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 95% approval rating, with an average score of 7.98 out of 10 based on 40 reviews. The website’s critical consensus reads: “By pairing its emotional punches with stronger humor, Cobra Kai’s third season finds itself in fine fighting form.”
