HBO Max has begun production for season 3 of the DC Comics superhero drama, Titans. The show has announced today that they have found their Barbara Gordon in actress/musician Savannah Welch (pictured below).
First appearing in Detective Comics #359, Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner Jim Gordon and a prominent member of the Bat-Family. She fought alongside Batman for years as Batgirl, until the Joker severely injured her spine, making her a paraplegic and forcing her to fight crime a different way. Known as Oracle, Gordon provided intelligence and computer hacking services to assist her fellow superheroes, eventually becoming a founding member of the Birds of Prey. In recent years, Gordon was able to rehabilitate herself and once again don the mantle of Batgirl.
However, in Titans season 3 Barbara has a contentious relationship with Bruce Wayne which leaves her and Brenton Thwaites’ Dick Grayson estranged. When Grayson returns to Gotham, the sparks of an old romance begin to flare up. Welch’s Gordon will serve as the new Gotham City Police Commissioner.
The actress will join the third season of the DC Universe series alongside another character to be introduced, Roy Harper, who has yet to be officially announced. For fans of CW’s Arrow, that name might sound familiar, Harper was bow and arrow wielding hero Speedy, or Arsenal to some and later Red Arrow. He’s had a lot of names. Harper is the kid sidekick of course to Green Arrow. Rumors suggest Gordon will debut in the first episode of the new season. Best known for starring in the History Channel military drama Six, Welch touts various appearances in a bevy of television shows. On the big screen, Welch can be seen in Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and the 2018 thriller The Transcendents.
Like the character of Barbara Gordon, Welch has had to overcome her own tragedies. A bizarre accident in Wimberley in 2016 cost Savannah Welch her left leg after she was pinned by a vehicle. She was air-lifted to the hospital in serious condition. Doctors determined injuries sustained left her leg “beyond repair” and it was amputated. Welch has since learned to adapt to her prosthetic leg she has called in interviews her “robot leg.” Like Barbara Gordon, she rose above a tragedy and continues to live her life, chase her dreams, and now play a superhero. Talk about a come back!
The first two seasons of Titans, which first premiered on the now defunct DC Universe streaming service, is now streaming on HBO Max.
The show stars Brenton Thwaites, Anna Diop, Teagan Croft, Alan Ritchson, Minka Kelly, Ryan Potter, Iain Glen, and Chelsea Zhang.
The new season is expected to debut possibly late this Summer.
