He’s rebooted Star Trek and Star Wars, now director JJ Abrams and his production company will be taking on the crown jewel (next to Batman) of DC Comics, Superman, for Warner Bros.
Hannah Minghella will serve as producer. No plot yet and no attachments despite the fact that we’ve heard how Henry Cavill is eager to get back into the cape. Deadline has confirmed that author Ta-Nehisi Coates is writing the script.
Abrams has a big half billion deal over at WarnerMedia which he closed in September 2019 with his production company Bad Robot.
Bad Robot and Warner are developing the Justice League Dark Universe for film and TV. Justice League Dark (or JLD team) first appeared in the September 2011 issue of Justice League Dark #1 featuring such superheros, mostly occult and offbeat, as John Constantine, mystic and fortune teller Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man, and Zatanna. The roster is much larger, and members joined later on, with Swamp Thing being added in issue 19. Given their powers, they typically handled situations outside of the scope of the traditional Justice League, which includes Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Aquaman and The Flash.
Before director Bryan Singer brought Superman back to the big screen with Superman Returns, Abrams had plans to reinvent the character with the rumored Superman: Fly By. Some of the rumors surrounding that script would have drastically altered Superman’s origin. Krypton never exploded. Superman was sent to Earth to escape Zod, the dictator military ruler of Krypton. Superman was said to have been part of a Kryptonian prophecy; Lex Luthor would have been an FBI agent hunting down Clark Kent; Superman would know Kung-Fu (this was around the time of The Matrix) oh and the final act involved Superman teaming up with the US military (armed with kryptonite missiles) to take out Zod’s invading army. Then, because that wasn’t enough, it was going to be revealed Lex was Kryptonian too. Really out there stuff. Rumors also suggested Brendan Fraser would be cast as Superman and Anthony Hopkins was allegedly up for the role of Jor-El.
Not sure if Abrams wants to try and implement any of those into a new Superman film, but WB was really big at one point re-casting Superman with a black actor. A move that seems doomed to fail. Hopefully Warner Bros just gives us a good, hopeful, action packed Superman movie…with Cavill.
Sources claim that the newly announced J.J. Abrams’ ‘Superman’ film will focus on Calvin Ellis, the Black Superman from another Earth…
