We’ll be meeting a new character in the upcoming 11th and final season of The Walking Dead. Michael James Shaw (Blood & Treasure) has signed as a new series regular in AMC’s hit zombie apocalypse series.
The studio isn’t revealing many details, other than Shaw will portray the popular character known as Mercer.
Mercer (first name unknown) is a main character first encountered in Issue 177 of Image Comics‘ The Walking Dead. He is an officer of the Commonwealth and the de-facto leader of the Commonwealth Military. Several years after Rick Grimes‘ death, Mercer and Juanita are still a couple living happily at the Commonwealth.
The Walking Dead fans have been speculating whether Mercer would make it on the show for a while now, as the character plays a substantial role in several arcs of Robert Kirkman’s source comics.
Shaw is currently on the CBS heist show Blood & Treasure, but he’s no stranger to playing genre characters — the actor had a recurring role on the short-lived Constantine and also played Thanos’ VFX-ified son, Corvus Glaive, in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
The epic 24-episode Season 11 of The Walking Dead is currently in production and will start airing on AMC this summer.
