People are at their most vulnerable when…they get their haircut. Think about it. You are sitting down in a chair with your back turned from a hairdresser taking sharp objects to your head. So naturally, this idea makes for a great serial killer movie.
Based off a short film of the same name and written and directed by the same person (Jill Gevargizian) The Stylist follows a lonely hair stylist named Claire (Najarra Townsend) becomes obsessed with the lives of her clients and descends into murderous madness. Claire viciously scalps her clients and keeps their hair as apart of her collection. As if she is absorbing their lives but never feeling completely satisfied.
When a long time client who is a bride to be, Olivia (Brea Grant), requests Claire to do her hair for her wedding, the Stylist has to decide between choosing friendship over her bloodlust. At first Olivia comes across as too trusting even overbearing to a certain a degree, however as Claire becomes more trusting of her, Claire’s obsession for killing turns to an obsession for Olivia. At one point it even looks as if Claire might give up her serial killer ways until the bloodlust is just too much to ignore.
Townsend play a convincing lunatic whose personality sways between shy and reserved to absolutely insane.
The film is also shot beautifully. The film is drenched in hues of yellows, reds, and greens. The way the camera also follows the carefully skilled coloring, cutting and brushing of Claire’s clients hair is also very stylistic.
Overall the film is a total trip and worth watching for its clever cinematography and unique storytelling. HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience highly recommends DEVOURING The Stylist!
