The Oscar Nominations Are In! Who Will Win The Big Prize At The 93rd Academy Awards?

Nominations for 93rd Academy Awards were announced Monday morning and women and diversity fared well.

Streaming services, which were already on the rise as an awards-season presence, are poised to dominate in April, both with their own productions (like Netflix’s “Mank”) and with traditional studio films that were released through streaming platforms because of the pandemic (like Searchlight Pictures’s “Nomadland,” which is streaming on Hulu).

Several films earned six nominations each, including: “Nomadland,” starring Frances McDormand as a woman traveling the American West looking for work after the Great Recession; “Minari,” (HipsterZOMBIEJoint pick to win big) director-writer Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical story of a Korean American family that moves from California to rural Arkansas in the 1980s; and “Judas and the Black Messiah,” the biopic of Fred Hampton, the Black Panther leader killed after a man infiltrated the group as an FBI informant.

The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun (Minari) will be going up against Chadwick Boseman’s last performance (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) and Oscar favs like Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins.

As for Best Director it’s females leading the charge with Chloe Zhao, “Nomadland” and Emerald Fennell, “Promising Young Woman” set to fight it out for that Oscar.

And in the Best Picture category one has to imagine if the Academy goes for most uplifting movie, Minari should win. But in a very erratic racial and gender political climate it will most likely end up being a toss up between “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Promising Young Woman.” Check out the full list of nominees below:
