Zack Snyder’s Justice League, often referred to as the “Snyder Cut,” is the 2021 director’s cut of the 2017 American superhero film Justice League. It presents Justice League—the fifth film of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), the sequel to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and based on the DC Comics team Justice League—as director Zack Snyder had intended it before he left the production. Like the theatrical release, Zack Snyder’s Justice League follows the Justice League—Batman(Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and the Flash (Ezra Miller)—as they attempt to save the world from the catastrophic threat of Darkseid (Ray Porter), Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds), and their army of Parademons.
Following its opening weekend, Samba TVreported that 1.8 million American households had watched at least the first five minutes of the film between March 19–21. The total was behind the three-day total of fellow DCEU film Wonder Woman 1984 (2.2 million) but ahead of the pilot episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (1.7 million), which debuted the same weekend on Disney+.Samba TV also reported that just one-third of households watched the film in its entirety in a single sitting.Over its first full week of release, the film was watched by 2.2 million households in the United States, with 792,000 (36%) finishing it. Over the same timeframe, the HBO Max app was downloaded 64% more and opened 8.9% more than in an average week. Forbesestimated that if all new subscribers watched the film and stayed subscribed to the platform, Zack Snyder’s Justice Leaguewould result in around $266 million in revenue for Warner Bros.
Critics praised Snyder’s direction and “ability to offer more depth to characters,” but the film’s runtime was criticized.Varietystated that “no matter how the critics feel about Snyder’s film, they all seem to agree on one point: it is superior to the 2017 theatrical version of Justice League.”The Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap also noted that most critics thought the film was superior to the 2017 version.
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, 72% of 268 critics have given the film a positive review, with an average rating of 6.8/10. The site’s critics consensus reads, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League lives up to its title with a sprawling cut that expands to fit the director’s vision – and should satisfy the fans who willed it into existence.”
