Ever since Disney bought Fox, Marvel Studios has slowly been planning a massive X-Men reboot and remove itself from everything that is Fox X-Men (with exception being Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool.) Now the black sheep of the franchise, The New Mutants, which Disney has gone out of its way to bury, is headed for HBO Max. That’s right, not Disney+, HBO Max.
The news was revealed by HBO Maxrecently. The streaming service recently released a list of all the titles that will be made available to subscribers in April. Among them is The New Mutants, which debuts on April 10. This will be the first time that the Marvel flick will be made available on a streaming service. It was originally released on Blu-ray/DVD and 4K Ultra HD in November and has been available to rent digitally. But those who are subscribed to HBO Max will now have the chance to watch the movie at no additional charge in a matter of days.
It may be odd to see The New Mutantshead over to HBO Max, considering that the film is owned by Disney. Many had wondered if Hulu or Disney+ would be the services to get the first crack at the X-Men movie. However, Fox had an ongoing deal with HBO that saw all of the studio’s new films get a window on HBO. Everything on HBO is also available on HBO Max, so seeing The New Mutants on the service isn’t too big of a surprise. Once it’s done on HBO Max, it will probably head to a Disney-owned service. Where it will find a nice forever home next to the home video Ewoks films and Ben Affleck’s Daredevil.
