The Mandalorian is one of the biggest streaming shows ever so naturally the show has attracted top tier actors and directors attention since it came out. Now The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson wants to step back into the franchise he single handily almost tanked.
Reporter Sariah Wilson (via ComingSoon) recently caught up with director Rian Johnson for an upcoming story in USA Today, and she revealed that the filmmaker is very interested in taking the helm of an episode of The Mandalorian. In fact, she said Johnson “was dying to” direct an episode, but right now he’s focused on getting Knives Out 2 off the ground. You can’t blame him when Netflix is giving him hundreds of millions of dollars to make two sequels to his 2019 whodunnit mystery.
Johnson confirmed that he’s already spoken to Dave Filoni about directing The Mandalorian at some point. The director’s desire to get in on the bounty hunting fun was solidified when he visited the set during production on the first season.
If Johnson did get to direct an episode he would join the ranks of previous episode directors like Bryce Dallas Howard, Deborah Chow,Rick Famuyiwa, Taika Waititi, Peyton Reed, and Robert Rodriguez.
Now even the strongest TLJ supporters have to admit that the film not only subverted expectations it also dashed them. The film had such a polarizing effect on the fan base that Lucasfilm prematurely ended the Skywalker Saga. Now I absolutely love Johnson’s other films like Brick, Looper, and of course, Knives Out. But I think I’ve seen all I need to see of his Star Wars.
