From Superman’s Father Jor-El to the Greek Pantheon, actor Russell Crowe has revealed what Marvel character he is playing in Thor: Love & Thunder.
The actor revealed in a radio interview that he was doing his last day of filming as Zeus, who is famously the father of Heracles and ruler of the Olympian Gods.
“I’m going to get on my bicycle and I’m going to ride up to Disney Fox Studios,” said Crowe to Australian radio station Joy 94.9. “Around 9:15, I shall be Zeus! It’s for Thor. It’s my last day of Zeus-ing about and I’m going to enjoy it.”
In the Marvel canon, Zeus is the Olympian God of Thunder and Wisdom. The youngest son of Cronus, who he later killed to take the throne, Zeus has superhuman qualities such as strength and immortality. It’s an interesting addition from Greek mythology as Thor is from Germanic mythology. This will mark the first time Greek Mythological beings will appear in the MCU.
Thor: Love and Thunder is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is intended to be the direct sequel to Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Taika Waititi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, and stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, alongside Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Jaimie Alexander, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, and Jeff Goldblum.
Hemsworth and Waititi had discussed returning for a sequel to Ragnarok by January 2018. It was officially announced and titled in July 2019, with the pair attached alongside Thompson and Portman; the latter agreed to return to the franchise, after not appearing in Ragnarok, when Waititi revealed plans to adapt the Mighty Thor comic books in which Portman’s character Jane Fostertakes on the mantle and powers of Thor after suffering from cancer. Robinson joined the film in February 2020, with Waititi later describing it as a romance film. Filming began in January 2021 in Sydney, Australia.
Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
