American Psycho and Saw are two of the most iconic thriller/horror movies to come out in the early 2000s. Now, the two films might be coming to streaming services as two new series.
Despite the fact that Spiral is a few weeks away from release, Deadline reports that Lionsgate is currently developing an American Psycho TV series, with possible plans for a Saw TV series as well.
Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs had to say about the projects:
We’ve just wrapped up Dear White People which was a really good experience, Blindspotting is coming up, American Psycho is in development. We’re always exploring what we can do in television with something like the Saw franchise, so that’s a conversation.
American Psycho is a 2000 American neo-noirblack comedyslasher film co-written and directed by Mary Harron, based on Bret Easton Ellis‘s 1991 novel of the same name. It was a big film for actor Christian Bale. In 1987, wealthy New York investment banker Patrick Bateman‘s life revolves around dining at trendy restaurants while keeping up appearances for his fiancée Evelyn and his circle of wealthy and shallow associates, most of whom he hates and murders throughout the film.
Saw is an American horror franchise created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell. It consists of nine feature films and additional media. The franchise primarily revolves around serial killer John Kramer, also called the “Jigsaw Killer” or simply “Jigsaw”. He was introduced briefly in Saw and developed in more detail in Saw II and the subsequent films. Rather than killing his victims outright, Kramer traps them in situations that he calls “tests” or “games” to test their will to live through physical or psychological torture and believes that if they survive, they will be “rehabilitated”. Despite the fact that Kramer was murdered in Saw III, the films continue to focus on the posthumous influence of the Jigsaw Killer and his apprentices by exploring his character via flashbacks.
I could see American Psycho working as a series more than Saw. There’s a lot you could explore with the character of Patrick Bateman, after all he is the 21st century Norman Bates. But with Saw there comes expectation with the death traps. Saw the series would just be one gory death after another that would fizzle out quickly. I am all in on an American Psycho series though.
