We celebrate May 4th by enjoying the Star Wars films, but there are some fun Star Wars fan films that are enjoyable as well. In fact, you might argue that we would prefer these films would have been canon rather than The Last Jedi or Rise of Skywalker! Let’s begin this list with a young Qui-Gon Jinn film.

10. Rage of Vasola Xor –
On May 4, 2020 in the midst of COVID-19, this film was made with one actor voicing and portraying all characters involved in the story. This short film is set decades before The Phantom Menace, portraying Qui-Gon Jinn as an apprentice, answering a distress signal that turns out to be a trap created by Vasola Xor. Xor is out for revenge against the jedi after his father was killed in the crossfire of a battle involving a jedi. While it is not canon, this original story is interesting in that it shows Qui-Gon Jinn dealing with an angry dark-side user, in many ways much like Anakin. This little-known film is short, but not rushed, so it gives you a quick mission without skimping out on action or story, all the while, it doesn’t drag anything out. Considering the limitations due to the Coronavirus straining the production, it provided for an interesting look at a young Qui-Gon. Goal of the film was to create and publish a Star Wars fan film within a week to make the May 4th deadline. Length of film: 6 Minutes.
9. Rebel Scum –
Rebel Scum is an homage to the original trilogy, setting out to use stop motion as well as scale models for the visuals which creates a nostalgic feel and fantastic tribute to the original Star Wars films. After the events of the Battle of Hoth, a rebel is left stranded on Hoth. Film was shot on location in -30°C (-22°F) weather in Alberta, Canada. Length of film: 9 minutes.
8. Bossk: Scorekeeper –
Rebels are followed by Bossk in this film in what appears to be inspired by Predator (1987). What is noteworthy about this film is the costume design for Bossk looks incredible, even to the point that you could actually see this costume in a Star Wars film. Length of film: 16:38.
7. Windu Returns – A Lego Star Wars Story –
This original story is one of the best lego (fan) films ever created. Compelling story, return of 2 fan favorite characters and talented voicework all around. Windu is still alive after the events of Revenge of the Sith, as the force allows him to live in a gray area between life and death, prompting Windu to go on a mission. While this film clocks in just under 20 minutes, it doesn’t feel like it. Length of film: 18:55.
6. Kenobi – A Star Wars Story –
Before Disney could actually get to it, fans made a Kenobi production taking place after Revenge of the Sith. As a hermit, it shows a small part of the life Kenobi had on Tatooine while in hiding and protecting young Luke Skywalker. It shows a rather eventful day in the life of Kenobi in what we can only assume is one of very few eventful days in the life of a hermit. Length of film: 18:47.
5. Shards of the Past –
Shards of the Past explores Vader’s trust – or lack thereof – of his master. Vader sees himself fighting against the Emperor and even thinks he sees Padme…but, does he actually? Palpatine manipulates Vader in this film that many would find an emotional ride. Length of film: 16:18.
4. Whatever Happened to Mace Windu? –
Ever wonder if Windu survived? This live action film takes a look at Windu, who, still alive, is in hiding from the Empire that is now present in the galaxy. Windu comes face-to-face with Darth Vader himself. Takes place between Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One. Length of film: 10:26.
3. Darth Maul: Apprentice – A Star Wars fan film –
Rich with action, Darth Maul takes on a slew of jedi in an epic lightsaber battle among multiple force-sensitive combatants. The choreography is among one of the very best of any lightsaber fight you can find on YouTube. Darth Maul fans will enjoy this film. Length 17:48.
2. The Dark Redemption –
All the way back from 1999, Dark Redemption tells the tale of Mara Jade taking the plans for the death star and providing those plans to the rebellion. The story takes place before A New Hope, and thus changes the Mara Jade character from working for the Emperor at this time, and even makes her a jedi, before Luke becomes a jedi. Film even includes fan favorite character Boba Fett. Length of film: 24:31.
1. The Temptation of Qui-Gon Jinn –
Taking place shortly before The Phantom Menace, we see Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi in action. Impressive film, especially when you see that they ended up recreating scenes from future events in the films preceding their timeline (Episode 1 through 6). Length of film: 8:46.
