Per News Reelz:
The CW has made some surprising decisions in regards to the new shows they’re adding to lineup but what’s more notable is a series that was in high contention that is being passed on to be redeveloped.
The live-action Powerpuff Girls series will be redeveloped at the network. The Greg Berlanti-produced pilot from writers Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars) and Diablo Cody (Juno) was a front-runner & the casting of Dove Cameron, Chloe Bennet and rising star Yana Perrault helped solidify early buzz as industry insiders fully expected the update about disillusioned twentysomethings to score a spot on The CW’s fall schedule. Instead, Mike Pedowitz greenlit fellow frontrunner and Ava DuVernay’s DC Comics drama Naomi and a spinoff of The CW (and Netflix) hit All American to join straight-to-series entry The 4400 on the schedule. Powerpuff Girls remains an important franchise for Warners, which has tasked Regnier and Cody with redeveloping the show off-cycle. The entire cast, including Donald Faison, remains attached. The only thing that is concerning if you were hoping this show would happen is that The CW has been trying to redevelop a Lost Boys series, based on the film, off-cycle for years and it still hasn’t moved forward. That being said, Greg Berlanti has given the network many hits so that may give Powerpuff Girls an edge. Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift — which has yet to film a pilot — also remains in consideration, though it’s unclear if either will be for midseason 2021-22 or the 2022-23 season.
In other CW Arrowverse news, a proposed Black Lightning spin-off, Painkiller, is DOA. There wasn’t much interest in a spin-off anyways.
