When it comes to most sequels they always try to outdo what was introduced in the first film with diminishing returns. Luckily A Quiet Place 2 avoids that sequel pitfall and choose to expand on the world they created. The sequel introduces a whole new world of characters and dangers that makes this film a worthy addition to the Quiet Place story.
A Quiet Place Part II is the sequel to the 2018 film A Quiet Place, both of which follow a family that is forced to navigate and survive in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by blind monsters with an acute sense of hearing. The second installment of the Quiet Place series, the film was written, produced, and directed by John Krasinski under the studio Paramount Pictures. Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe reprise their roles from the first film while Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou join the cast; Krasinski returns from the first film in a flashback sequence set before the first film.
The film still keeps the origins of the creatures a mystery but it does show their arrival. In one of the best sequences of the film we see the creatures rampage through a small town.
Millicent Simmonds character, Regan, carries the film as the story mostly revolves around her journey to find a hidden colony of survivors who have access to a radio tower. The idea is that if Regan can transmit the sound that emits from her hearing aide (a sound that causes the aliens to become disoriented and weakened) then that could be the first step to killing these creatures once and for all.
Simmonds and Noah Jupe (who plays the younger brother, Marcus) both really bring it once again in some very chaotic and heart wrenching scenes throughout the film.
The film continues the amazing sound design that can only be fully appreciated with a theater surround sound system. The way it goes between blaring and bombastic action sequences to absolute silence is still perfectly depicted here.
Overall, A Quiet Place 2 is a sequel I originally thought didn’t need to be made, in fact I cringed at the thought of a sequel because the first film was such a fine self contained story that another film didn’t seem necessary. However, this sequel in a lot of ways surpasses the original and is not only a must see but a fantastic way to kick off the summer blockbuster season and to entice audiences to ditch their couches for the cinema again.
