Tell me if you have heard this one before: a guy gets blackout drunk, passes out at an Asian club. He wakes up long after the club has shut down. The drunken man stumbles onto an secretive meeting. Now I have a very close friend this happened to so I instantly knew I was going to love where this film was going. Unlike my friend though, this guy stumbles onto a support group…for serial killers.
Vicious Fun is a 2020 Canadian comedy horror film directed by Cody Calahan and starring Evan Marsh, Ari Millen, Amber Goldfarb, Julian Richings, Robert Maillet and David Koechner.
The film is set in 1983, Joel, a horror journalist, has a crush on his roommate who doesn’t return his feelings. Joel follows her recent date, Bob, to a bar in an attempt to get dirt on him to break them up. His failure leads to an evening of intoxication whereupon he awakens in the now closed bar to discover a self-help group for serial killers, one of whom is Bob.
Joel has all the trappings of a 1980s dweeb. He’s like a cross between Marty McFly (Back To The Future) and Charlie Brewster (Fright Night) not a complete loser but geeky just enough to call the friend zone his home.
Bob on the other hand is a sadistic killer he gives off major Patrick Bateman (American Psycho) vibes with cool and easy attitude that can snap at any moment to reveal a blood thirsty killer.
In a room occupied by a sword wielding cannibal; a crazed clown; an insane veteran; a colossal summer camp slasher; and mysterious leather clad woman, Joel is the odd man out whose made up story of being a taxi cab driving killer quickly falls apart.
Luckily one of the killers isn’t what they seem to be and is actually a killer of serial killers.
The slow going banter between the killers quickly ramps up to a tense cat and mouse stand off and Joel has to put his faith into a killer who may or may not be playing with a full deck.
The film is written with every bit of wit and charm one could expect from this kind of a horror comedy. The film has some particularly gruesome kills and even some fun twists throughout.
