What’s more frightening than being on a plane hijacked by terrorists? Being on a hijacked plane where one of the passengers in a vampire!
Blood Red Sky (also known as Transatlantic 473) is a 2021 action horror film directed by Peter Thorwarth, who co-wrote the screenplay with Stefan Holtz. The film stars Roland Møller, Peri Baumeister, Chidi Ajufo and Alexander Scheer.
The film follows a German widow, Nadja, and her son Elias prepare to board a plane to New York; Nadja, who appears to suffer from leukemia, set to visit a doctor who can provide her with the treatment she needs to restore her health. At the airport, Elias befriends a man named Farid, while his mother takes medicine that causes her severe discomfort. Unbeknownst to the passengers her treatments is the only thing keeping her vampiric blood lust at bay. However, her plans hit a brick wall when a terrorist cell hijacks the plane. She has to quickly decide whether to fall in line with the other passengers or let loose the beast within that might put her son in even more danger.
The way that vampirism is portrayed as an affliction here is unique and compelling. When Nadja loses her medication during the hijacking of the plane, you feel for her and the film does a good job humanizing her without dispelling the threat she imposes on not only the hijackers but on the rest of the passengers as well.
The film is thrilling and action packed. It’s like “30 Days of Night” on a plane. When the action picks up it continues at a breakneck pace until it’s explosive ending.
It’s an excellent bloody horror import from Germany now streaming on Netflix. I don’t want to go into heavy spoilers or reveal too much because the last half of the film is extremely good, all I can say is this is one horror flick that fans will be talking about in their top 10 horror flicks of 2021. It’s that good.
