George Romero’s iconic Night of the Living Dead has had as many sequels as its had adaptations. However, this retelling is a little bit different. Night of the Animated Dead re-tells the classic story but does so in a fresh new manner.
Directed by Jason Axinn the film stars the voice talents of Josh Duhamel, Dule Hill, Katharine Isabelle, James Roday Rodriguez, Katee Sackhoff, Will Sasso, Jimmi Simpson, Nancy Travis.
What the film lacks in the animation department more than makes up for with exceptional voice cast and gore. Back in the day due to budget constraints Romero could only do so much with the violence and gore the zombies would inflict or have inflicted on them. Here the violence is dialed up way more for modern audiences.
One of the best moments of the film is the flashback Ben refers to before he arrived at the abandoned house where he meets Barbara. I always wanted to see the incident that involved a truck crawling with zombies and smashing into a gas station. Even if we never see it on film at least we got see it depicted in animation form and it doesn’t disappoint.
All in all, Night of the Animated Dead isn’t groundbreaking or an absolute must see. However for people who have actually watched the countless horrible remakes of this classic, this is probably the best remake amongst them. It’s also a must see for Romero fans.
Hey I liked it! Night of the Animated Dead is now on Bly-ray.
