The original Escape Room film rode the wave of the popularity that ran through the young adult community three years ago like a brush fire. Escape Rooms were THE thing to do with its multiple puzzles, themes, and prizes. So it was only a matter of time before someone made a horror film based around it. The first film was a pleasant surprise and arguably one of the best horror films to come out that year. Fast forward to 2021 and we land at Escape Room: Tournament of Champions.
This film is directed by Adam Robitel and written by Will Honley, Maria Melnik, Daniel Tuch, and Oren Uziel. A sequel to 2019’s Escape Room, it stars Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, and Deborah Ann Wollreprising their roles from the first film, alongside new cast members Indya Moore, Holland Roden, Thomas Cocquerel, and Carlito Olivero, and follows a group of six people trying to survive a new series of more deadly escape rooms.
After escaping the “sole survivor” escape rooms orchestrated by the Minos Corporation, Zoey Davis and Ben Miller decide to confront the shadowy organization after finding coordinates to its New York City–based headquarters.
Now let me just stop right there. There is the biggest problem with this film. Sure Zoey and Ben survived the first film, but instead of handing over evidence to the FBI or the police their bright idea is to simply go after the corporation that almost killed them and…just gather more evidence? The worst mistake a sequel can commit is to show in the first 20 minutes how unnecessary it is. Not only does ER2 prove that, it solidifies it by trying to one up the escape rooms in this sequel in such a way you would have to be a Sheldon Cooper Big Bang Theory kind of nerd to figure them out. The cast is fine and the two supporting characters are likable. The problem here lies with a substandard plot & story and weak twist at the end that will have most people rolling their eyes.
In closing, ER2 only hurts the greatness of the first film. HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience says take a hard pass on Escape Room Tournament of Champions.
Escape Room One should be embarrassed to be associated with its sequel…
