Wrestling is back and better than ever these days. Whether it’s the global dominance of WWE, the highly rated docu-series Dark Side of the Ring, Netflix’s popular “GLOW” series or the new fan fav promotion AEW, wrestling is everywhere. So when I heard a new drama was coming to STARZ starring Arrow’s Stephen Amell as a struggling wrestling promoter in a small town I was sold.
“Heels” follows two brothers (Jack and Ace Spade) and rivals, one a villain, or “heel” in professional wrestling, the other a hero, or “face” play out scripted matches as they war over their late father’s wrestling promotion and vie for national attention in small town Georgia.
However outside the ring Ace is a stubborn loud mouth who gets into bar fights and Jack is a family man struggling to keep his father’s promotion afloat while finding time for his family.
The show is a lot like “Friday Night Lights” where it’s a drama about a sport but is more about the lives of the wrestlers outside of the ring. For example, Crystal who is Ace’s on again/off again girlfriend and wrestling valet wishes to be more apart of the show but is constantly told no. Until she shows she can hang with the boys with some impressive wrestling of her own.
There’s Wild Bill who is a “legend” who hit it big and left Jack’s promotion for the big time. But Bill is now having to tuck his tail between his legs and cower back after being fired for a lewd act on a plane.
At its heart though, Heels is about family and those you call family. It’s about falling from grace and redemption. The wrestlers battle their various demons outside the ring as fiercely as they battle each other.
Iconic wrestlers such as Mick Foley and CM Punk also make appearances throughout the season.
The final episode ends on a cliffhanger and blasts open the door of opportunity for one of them. Heels is going to be one of those sleeper shows you will want to tell your friends about. Highly recommended!
