Tony Khan is Vince McMahon and WWE’s greatest fear. Khan is like an weird amalgam of Eric Bischoff and Ted Turner. Bischoff and Turner nearly ran WWE out of business decades previously with their WCW show but then flamed out due to poor booking and outrageous spending. Khan is like the best (or maybe the worst of both). He’s younger than Vince, knows what fans want more than Vince, and is having failed Hollywood writer book his wrestling shows like Vince. Now, the inevitable has happened. Friday Night Smackdown, the flagship show for WWE, will be crossing over into AEW’s Rampage timeslot and both shows will go head to head in the ratings.
Khan saw this and instantly tweeted this:
Bold words, because if AEW doesn’t beat WWE in the ratings on Friday night, Khan will have some serious egg on his face. However, Smackdown is moving to FS1 on Friday due to a baseball game airing on FOX. AEW Rampage will air on its regular station, TNT.
WWE is in a stat of flux at the moment. Over the past year they have laid off a plethora of talent both behind the scenes and in ring workers. A lot of which have found their way onto AEW and become huge stars. WWE continues to struggle to elevate new stars or entice new fans to tune in. Its been rumored for months WWE would be sold but to who? And who will run it?
Either way, AEW is cementing itself as the better wrestling organization but will they be able to maintain it or fall apart like WCW?
Both Smackdown and RAMPAGE air Friday nights. May the best show win!
