Zack Snyder expands his Netflix-Zombie Verse that started with “Army of the Dead” with a prequel titled “Army of Thieves.” AoT takes place before the events of AoD but just as the zombie outbreak happens. However, if you were expecting more zombie action you might be disappointed in this prequel. AoT tells the origin story of the master safecracker, Ludwig Dieter.
The film is directed by Matthias Schweighöfer from a screenplay by Shay Hatten, based on a story he wrote with Zack Snyder. A prequel to Army of the Dead, it is the second installment in the Army of the Deadfranchise; the film stars Schweighöfer, who reprises his role as Ludwig Dieter, alongside a supporting cast that includes Nathalie Emmanuel, Ruby O. Fee, Stuart Martin, Guz Khan, and Jonathan Cohen.
If you are a fan of films like “The Italian Job” and “Oceans 11” you will love this fast paced, action packed comedy. Schweighöfer shines here as he plays an even more awkward and shy version of Dieter. But the real question is, does this film work as a prequel to a zombie film. Yes and No. The cast is likable. The heists are shot in a stylish and kinetic way. But if you never saw this film and only watched Army of the Dead you wouldn’t be missing much. However you would be denying yourself a fun action comedy that works better as a standalone story than the prequel to a zombie film.
In conclusion, HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience recommends checking out “Army of Thieves” especially if you like your zombie films with little to no zombies.
Just out here looking for zombies in this zombie prequel film…
