In honor of November 3rd which is Godzilla Day, an all-new Godzilla vs Hedorah short film has been released. It was Directed by Kazuhiro Nakagawa and was done for Godzilla’s 67th anniversery and Godzilla vs. Hedorah’s 50th.
For people unfamiliar with the most environmentally cautious kaiju film ever made, the film is set in a time where pollution was a very real threat to Japan and the rest of the world, this film sees one of the more cult-favorite monsters of the film series debut. While starting out as a very strange tadpole creature, Hedorah soon feeds and grows from humanity’s industrial garbage into a massive walking (and flying) horror of hazardous waste! Godzilla appears to help “Save the Earth,” but finds that even Hedorah may be too tough of an opponent. Will the King of the Monsters prevail? Will Hedorah ever stop growing? Will you ever forget the sight of Godzilla flying?
This film has become one of the more popular films over the years thanks to a fantastic villain, some unique scenes including some animated sequences, and a very catchy theme song. Whether you know the monster as Hedorah, or The Smog Monster, or even “Smoggy” as some fans have said, this classic from 1971 is required viewing for anyone that wishes to learn more about the Godzilla series. While Hedorah did not appear again in another film until 2004’s “Godzilla Final Wars,” the character is very popular with the collecting community, having spawned many toy and apparel products since its introduction.
The above take on Godzilla vs. Hedorah uses the classic “suitmation” style to bring the battling kaiju to the screen. The suits worn by the performers in the short were previously used in the making of 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.
Hedorah is quite a nasty enemy, always changing form while releasing poisonous gas and corrosive sludge. When tasked with making a Godzilla movie, Banno wanted to deal with a real world issue in the same way the original film was an anti-nuke statement. That’s why he chose to make a monster that would be the living embodiment of pollution.
The rematch between Godzilla and Hedorah a fun way to spend 5 minutes.
