A movie like the new horror/comedy “Black Friday” is typically review proof, but sadly when it misses the mark as much as it does it’s hard to not point it out.
The film is written by Andy Greskoviak and directed by Casey Tebo. It stars Devon Sawa, Ivana Baquero, Ryan Lee, Stephen Peck, Michael Jai White, and Bruce Campbell (who serves as producer).
Several employees at a big-box toy store are infected by an alien substance while preparing for Black Friday. On the day of, and after customers are allowed inside, the remaining employees discover that the infected have turned into zombies. While some employees work on closing the doors and eliminating the infected, Ken and Jonathan defend themselves from a zombie in the bathroom. The group realizes that the infected are building something in the middle of the store.
The film lives and dies off the charm and charisma of Bruce Campbell, who plays a cowardly toy store manager named Jonathan. The film spends so much time trying to do some kind of social commentary about Black Friday and the workers who have to endure it that at it gets lost in the tall grass.
The concept of a horror movie on Black Friday is a good one but I think the idea on paper was ultimately better than what was shot on film.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some decent laughs and gags peppered throughout the film but sadly not enough to keep even the most die hard Bruce Campbell fans entertained.
