The latest MCU series, “Hawkeye” spotlights the most overlooked Avenger.
Hawkeye is the 5th Disney plus streaming series set with in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following heroes after the events of Avengers Endgame.
Jeremy Renner reprises his role as Clint Barton from the film series, with Hailee Steinfeld joining him as Kate Bishop. Tony Dalton, Fra Fee, Brian d’Arcy James, Aleks Paunovic, Piotr Adamczyk, Linda Cardellini, Simon Callow, Vera Farmiga, Alaqua Cox, Zahn McClarnon, Florence Pugh, and Vincent D’Onofrio also star.
The series sees an older Clint who now suffers from hearing loss and is reeling from the recent death of his close friend, Natasha Romanoff, The Black Widow. When his plans for a nice family Christmas are dashed by the sudden reemergence of his violent moniker, the Ronin, Clint must once more take up the bow and arrow and save wide eyed fan girl, Kate Bishop, who is caught up in a mess much bigger than just her cosplaying as Ronin.
The show does the best job so far of all the MCU shows and really feels connected to the much larger story while still being it’s own thing. The series does a good job of show how much the loss of Natasha has affected the MCU and the burden of guilt that weighs heavily on Clint.
The series is a fun passing of the torch as well between Clint and Kate. Kate earns her stripes and the mantle isn’t just given to her lightly or without hesitancy. Steinfeld brings great levity and exhilaration to the role of Kate Bishop and is a welcome addition to the MCU.
Another great character in the series is Yelena reprised once again by Florence Pugh who continues to add so much to the role of Natasha’s sister. She’s cool, cocky, and not afraid of anyone or anything. When it was revealed she was blipped only to come back 5 years later to find out her sister was dead it was heartbreaking. In a series that lacked good antagonists, Yelena was a welcome foil in the plans of our heroes. Her office fight she has with Kate in the final episode is one of the best shot action scenes in the MCU.
As for the aforementioned antagonists, they are the weakest part of the show. The tracksuit gang are just nameless goons who say bro a lot and their leader, the deaf but deadly, Echo, is alright but I don’t know how or why she is getting her own spin-off series from this.
But it’s late in the series that we find the real mastermind behind all this is actually Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin. D’Onofrio slips effortlessly back into the role as the stern and imposing crime boss. I just wish we got less of boring family drama of Echo and her brother and more of Kingpin. It’s alluded to that Echo kills Kingpin but come on, this Kingpin was hit by a car and blown up in one episode. I doubt one bullet will take him down. More than likely, Kingpin will return to torment Echo in her spin-off series.
Overall, Hawkeye serves as a great passing of the torch from one generation to the next and sets up Kate Bishop as not just an addition to the MCU but also as a possible Avenger moving forward.
