Looks like studios are changing their release tactics amid growing cases of Omicron infections. Pixar has shifted the release of the upcoming animated film, “Turning Red” from a theatrical release to a Disney Plus streaming exclusive.
The film will debut on Disney Plus, Friday March 11th.
It’s the third Pixar movie to skip theaters and go straight to Disney+, after Soul and Luca.
The international markets where Disney+ isn’t available, Turning Red will be released theatrically, with dates to be announced.
Disney describes “Turning Red” as the story of “a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence.” Directed by Domee Shi (who made the Pixar short “Bao”), it’s the first Pixar film helmed solely by a woman. Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh lead the voice cast.
