Every year a new tv series comes out that just grabs you by the eyeballs and demands that you watch it. Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” is that show.
Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets stars an ensemble cast led by Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, and Sammi Hanratty as four teenagers involved in a plane crash in 1996, with Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci portraying their adult counterparts. Ella Purnell, Steven Krueger, and Warren Kole also star in lead roles.
In 1996, a team of New Jersey high school soccer players travels to Seattle for a national tournament. While flying over Canada, their plane crashes deep in the wilderness and the remaining team members are left to survive for nineteen months. The series chronicles their attempts to survive while also tracking their current lives in 2021.
It’s like Lord of The Flies meets Heathers.
The showrunners do a masterful job not only balancing a dozen or so characters but doing so in two different stretches of time. The 90s portion of the show is filled with teen angst and nostalgia while the present day half of the story delivers a cryptic mystery not only about where or how these girls ended up but also how the crash has impacted their lives.
The casting here is also top notch. The younger cast look like their adult counterparts is especially eerie how close in look they were able to get. But right off the bat, you know early on that not everyone made it out of the forest and that’s one of the greatest mysteries of the show is finding out who did. Not to mention one survivor is also blackmailing the others by threatening to reveal all the horrible things that went down in the forest, things that aren’t fully revealed by season’s end.
Oh and there is also a very creepy supernatural element that comes into play about midway through involving an insignia and ritual sacrifice. But don’t worry, the cast is so likable in the past and present day that they distract you from the dragging out of the show’s many mysteries.
Yellowjackets is a female heavy, 90s nostalgic fever dream of a series that will leave you completely rattled and scratching your head about where the show will go next.
HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience highly recommends checking out season one of Yellowjackets streaming now on Showtime.
