HBO Max’s Batgirl film has cast the role of Alysia Yeoh, the best friend of Barbara Gordon, AKA Batgirl. Ivory Aquino is the first transgender actress to be cast in a live-action DC movie (via Variety). In fact, Aquino is the second openly trans actress to be featured in DC live action. The first was CW’s Supergirl actress Nicole Maines who played the hero, Dreamer.
The Batgirl movie was already looking diverse, with star Leslie Grace playing the hero and an appearance by none other than Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. But the recent announcement that Aquino will bring beloved character Alysia Yeoh to the big screen is trailblazing; she’ll be the first trans character in any mainstream superhero movie.
Yeoh, the best friend of fellow heroine Barbara Gordon (to be played by Grace in the upcoming film), first appeared in a 2011 issue of the comic “Batgirl.”
“Aah the bat’s out of the bag,” Aquino wrote Wednesday in an Instagram post. “THANK YOU for the outpouring of love from dear friends & beloved fans of #Batgirl and her #bff #AlysiaYeoh.”
Batgirl is scheduled to arrive on HBO Max sometime this year.
