Hollywood just loves remaking classics. Apple TV+ has ordered a TV series remake of the classic 1927 silent sci-fi film “Metropolis”. Emmy nominee Sam Esmail, who is known for creating “Mr. Robot” and “Homecoming” will write and direct the entire series.
The original film was directed by Fritz Lang based on the 1925 novel, and is set in a futuristic urban dystopia. It follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master.
Metropolis painted a future world unlike any other when it debuted. Apple TV+ has honestly been striking out with their sci-fi shows lately. Invasion was a sluggish bore and Foundation wasn’t that much better. Hopefully they treat Metropolis with the respect it deserves.
