In a world blinded by the allure of social media everyone is a brand onto themselves. How we present ourselves through the filtered lens of instagram tells an exaggerated story of ourselves. However, one girl took that notion and created a bigger than life personality that she had everyone from socialites to the elite taking notice. And giving her whatever she wanted. This is the story of Anna Delvey aka Anna Sorokin aka the FAKE German Heiress.
The miniseries was created and produced by Shonda Rhimes, inspired by the story of Anna Sorokin and the article in New York titled “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” by Jessica Pressler. Ozark’s Julia Garner stars as Anna Sorokin, the title character.
The tone of the mini-series is as schizophrenic as Anna herself. One minute leaving 100 dollar tips and treating friends to fine dining meals and the next saying her credit cards don’t work due to technical issues or her father failing to wire her the money.
But the way Garner presents Anna is like that of a criminal mastermind. So conniving and sure of herself that the notion of anyone trying to call her out on her lies is insulting. The way she dug her claws into the rich, influential, and powerful is either a testament to just how smart this 25 year old Russian girl was or how incredibly stupid the elite class are.
The show details each of the people Anna uses to either get ahead, stab in the back, or use as a stepping stone.
I mean we are talking about someone who might be the most convincing liar because she believes every word that spews out of her mouth no matter how absurd it is. She is brilliant in how she chooses her words like navigating through a mine field. She says just the right thing to make you believe that maybe she is right and you are the one in the wrong.
It’s an angering but mesmerizing mini-series that is more of an indictment on the New York Elite than Anna herself.
HipsterZOMBIEJoint highly recommends checking out Inventing Anna, streaming now on Netflix.
