Despite horrendous reviews and an ugly 16% on Rotten Tomatoes, Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off film, Morbius, starring Jared Leto as the vampiric anti-hero, won the weekend box office.
The newest installment in Sony’s Spider-Man-Less Cinematic Universe earned $84 million worldwide over its opening weekend. It is by no means great, but is also probably just good enough for Sony to continue apace with its Spider-plans to continue building toward a Sinister Six movie.
Ticket sales weren’t even close to matching 2018’s “Venom” ($80 million debut) and its 2021 sequel “Let There Be Carnage” ($90 million debut), which were Sony’s first attempts at spinning Spider-Man adversaries — the characters the studio licenses from Marvel — into cinematic riches. But business could have been way, way worse considering “Morbius” has a 16% on Rotten Tomatoes — an average score that’s somehow even lower than “Venom” and its embarrassing 30% mark.
Just goes to show not every Marvel character has the mass appeal of Iron Man or Thor. Morbius is a Z grade character at best. But the so-so box office won’t deter Sony from making more Spider-Man related films, up next is “Kraven” starring Aaron Taylor Johnson.
