Director Robert Eggers is known for creating atmospheric and unique cinematic visions of stories unlike any we have seen before. His mesmerizing work on films like VVITCH and The Lighthouse were slow burn tales that felt like fever dreams and stayed with you long after the credits rolled.
Eggers applies the same basic formula here.
Based on the legend of Amleth, the film stars co-producer Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe. The plot follows Amleth, a Viking prince who sets out on a quest to avenge the murder of his father.
Skarsgård had wanted to make a Viking film for several years, and Eggers decided to make the film his third project after the pair met to discuss possible collaborations. It helps that Skarsgard played a Viking for years on the HBO vampire series, True Blood.
Speaking of blood, this film is very bloody. If you are looking for ridiculous amounts of gore and brutality, The Northman is for you. Skarsgard goes into a full in primal rage a several points throughout the film and it’s glorious. In fact if you really want to make this film even more badass you could just put the film on mute during action scenes and crank some metal by Amon Amarth or The Sword. The film culminates in a spectacular and brutal battle between Amleth (Skarsgard) and his father’s murderer, Fjölnir (Claes Bang) at the steps of an active volcano called Hekla.
The Northman is so Metal it makes you want to throw up the horns as credits roll, grab some mead and victoriously shout a war cry. Or at the very least will make you want to play Assassin’s Creed Valhalla again. Either way, HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience recommends checking out The Northman, streaming now on VOD.
