The popular animated sci-fi anthology series, Love Death + Robots returns for a third season with its most trippy and bloody episodes yet.
Tim Miller and David Fincher continues to the push the envelope with this groundbreaking series that is as beautiful as it is terrifying at times. Season 1 pushed the boundaries of how far they could push the sexual content. Season 3 goes balls to wall (some cases literally) with the gore this season.
Because the show is an anthology series, the tone is all over the place. Some episodes are comedic, others are trippy sci-fi stories, and finally some are a bloody gore fest.
Season 3 still represents a wonderful range of styles and storytelling: anime, Pixar CGI, experimental 3D rendering, the uncanny valley of video games, and stop-motion animation are all represented here. The stand out episodes this season is the following:
Bad Travelling:
Director David Fincher takes the helm of one of the more horrific tales of season 3. When a crab like sea monster invades a ship and barters with the Captain to transport it and its spore to the nearest populated island. Bad Travelling is so wonderfully exciting and genuinely awesome. It’s atmospheric and the crab creature horrific.
Night of the Mini Dead:
What’s better than a zombie apocalypse? A miniature zombie apocalypse! Night of the Mini Dead is essentially a zombie movie played out entirely with miniature sets at great speed; the stop-motion animation and set design is amazing. The high pitched voices of the little people running around adds some comedy to the shortest episode of the season.
Kill Team Kill:
A team of commandos brawl with a blood thirsty robotically enhanced grizzly and the action hits the gas and doesn’t let up until the credits roll. The episode has a Carpenter-esque pulsating score that keeps the mood tense. The episode might be the goriest of the season.
Mason’s Rats:
A farmer must square off against a colony of intelligent invading rats. The vermin literally take up arms against the farmer forcing him to invest in robotic deterrents. There is a ton of hilarious rodent bloodshed here. Easily the best episode of the season.
Jibaro:
Finally the last of my favorite episodes this season is also its most beautiful. It’s like a pretty yet violent music video. The episode is an allegory for imperialism, greed, and the rape of the earth. The supernatural entity in the story is gorgeous, mysterious, and haunting. Despite that, it’s the intruding group of imperialists that are depicted as the main villains of the story.
As mentioned before the animation continues to improve with each season and the stories here are some of the best ones yet. Love Death + Robots continues to be this generation’s Heavy Metal with its mature content, hypnotic visuals, and unique storytelling.
HipsterZOMBIEJoint Experience highly recommends checking out season 3 of Love Death + Robots streaming now on Netflix.
