Unlike the Star Wars streaming shows, which have a set plan and release schedule that right on schedule, the future of Star Wars on the big screen is very uncertain. The sequel trilogy was supposed to be 3 films of the legacy characters passing the torch to the next generation and continuing the saga into episodes 10-12. But it became very apparent after The Last Jedi that only did JJ Abrams not have a clear cut endgame for Star Wars, whatever outline he did have got severely derailed by director Rian Johnson’s script that depicted the franchise hero, Luke Skywalker, as a cowardly old failure, and killed him off in a rather unremarkable fashion. JJ Abrams did what he could with The Rise of Skywalker but the damage was done. The Skywalker Saga came to an unsatisfying end with TROS. The failure of the sequel trilogy drove away David Benioff & D.B. Weiss. It halted whatever trilogy Rian Johnson had planned. And just recently the Patty Jenkins “Rogue Squadron” film came to screeching halt.
So where does the story go post Skywalker? This is something Kathleen Kennedy, head honcho over at Lucasfilm, desperately wants to see happen.
Speaking to Total Film, Kennedy confirmed various reports that the next film slated to release under the Star Wars banner would be Taika Waititi’s currently unknown project. Kennedy went on to reveal that they are currently aiming to have it release sometime in “late 2023,” with no official date set as of yet.
“Yeah. Well, not 2023, but late 2023,” Kennedy said of the project. “We haven’t locked anything in.”
Kennedy went on to say there were many projects at various stages of development and that the goal was to create a new saga for the future. Waititi has made a name for himself with the Thor franchise, What We Do In The Shadows, JOJO RABBIT, and Our Flag Means Death.
